Styling Your Session: Fall Trends

As a photographer, I know that styling your photo session for fall can be a bit of a head-scratcher. Not to worry, because I'm here to help you make the most of your session whether you are looking for fall engagement photos, fall family photos, or even transitioning into winter family photos! So, let's chat about how you can coordinate outfits, choose the right colors, and help you feel picture-perfect but also comfortable during your session.

1. Coordinating Outfits, Not Matching

First, let's talk about coordinating outfits instead of going for the matchy-matchy look. While dressing in identical colors might seem like the way to go, it's often better to opt for complementary hues. This adds depth and visual interest to your photos, making them more engaging and dynamic. For fall, think about a color palette that includes creams, tans, blush, and grays.

2. Embrace Fall Hues

It is simply gorgeous here in the Triad in North Carolina this time of year, and your outfit choices can echo this beauty. Embrace the season's colors by incorporating warm tones like deep reds, burnt oranges, and golden yellows into your attire. These colors work wonderfully in the fall backdrop, creating a seamless blend between you and the surroundings.

3. Steer Clear of White

I know white is a classic color and one that everyone has in their closet, but we need to consider how it plays out in photos. White outfits can sometimes lack contrast, especially if your summer tan is fading. This might result in you appearing washed out in the images. To ensure you stand out beautifully, opt for off-white or cream tones, which offer a softer look while still harmonizing with the fall palette. Or branch out as mentioned above and pull in those grays, tan/beige, etc. instead of stark white as a part of your color palette.

4. Footwear Matters

Don't overlook your footwear! For a polished look, consider close-toed shoes or dressy sandals. These options not only complement your outfit, but also add a touch of elegance to your fall photos. Boots, in particular, can be a stylish and fun addition to your ensemble, adding some flair and personality to your look.

5. Accessorize Thoughtfully

When it comes to accessories, less is often more. Avoid flashy jewelry and statement pieces that might distract from the main focus—you and your loved ones! Keep it simple with subtle jewelry choices that enhance your outfit without overpowering it.

6. Dressing the Gents

For the guys, solid colors tend to photograph exceptionally well. If you opt for patterned shirts, make sure the print isn't smaller than a dime. Smaller patterns can create strange visual effects in the camera, which can detract from the overall look of your photos. Stick to classic, timeless patterns if you're unsure or solids are not in your wardrobe.

7. Lovely Ladies

Ladies, consider sundresses or flowy maxi-length dresses as these tend to photograph really nicely. Fall is the perfect time to experiment with boots and floppy hats, which can add a touch of whimsy and romance to your photos. These accessories not only look great but can also help you feel more in tune with the style of the season.

8. Comfort is Key

Remember, comfort is crucial. If you're not comfortable and at ease in your chosen attire, it will show in the photos. So, choose outfits that not only look fantastic but also make you feel fantastic. Keep in mind weather, outdoor conditions, and sitting versus standing poses when choosing your clothing.

9. Transitioning Seasons: Winter Family Photos

If you’ve booked October Christmas Minis with me these tips still apply. Because the backdrop for the session will be seasonal you can keep your color palette simple and complimentary to traditional holiday tones. Just be sure to avoid harsh orange or yellow tones which would clash with the greenery of the Tree Farm and red backdrop items I’ll have set up for the shoot. Cream and gray neutral tones with hints of holiday colors or hues that go well with holiday colors are best. Right now, I love mixing in navy with deep red and green for a modern approach to styling holiday photos.

(P.S. If you haven’t figured out what to do for Christmas photos I have limited slots left for Greensboro and Charlotte area).

Are you still unsure about your color scheme? No worries! Feel free to reach out, and I'd be more than happy to suggest a color scheme that complements your vision and the occasion whether it be fall engagement photos 💍or fall family photos👨‍👩‍👧‍👧, or anything else you may have in mind.

As always, I’m here to assist and make your session the best experience for capturing precious moments. Happy Fall Y’all! 📸🍁

xoxo,

Erin
